41 dead as Aeroflot jet makes emergency landing in Moscow

Forty-one people were killed after a Russian plane, Aeroflot, made an emergency landing and burst into flames at Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow.

Two children and a flight attendant were among the dead, Russian media reports. One witness said it was a “miracle” anyone escaped the jet, which was carrying 73 passengers and five crew. “There are 37 survivors – 33 passengers and four members of the crew,” said an investigative committee official, Yelena Markovskaya.
Five people are in hospital. Aeroflot, Russia’s national carrier, said the plane was forced to return to the airport “for technical reasons”, but did not elaborate. Some flights have been diverted to other airports. What happened to the plane? The aircraft, a Sukhoi Superjet-100, departed Sheremetyevo airport at 18:02 local time (15:02 GMT) for the city of Murmansk.
The crew issued a distress signal when “malfunctions” occurred shortly after departure. After making an emergency landing at the airport, the plane’s engines caught fire on the runway, Aeroflot said in a statement. The crew “did everything to save the passengers,” who were evacuated in 55 seconds, the airline said. Aeroflot published a list of survivors (in Russian) who have been identified so far, adding that it will continue to be updated as new information comes to light.
Interfax quotes a source as saying the plane’s engines caught fire on the runway after a hard landing, not in mid-air as initially reported. Reports also suggest it did not succeed in its first emergency landing attempt. Murmansk’s Acting Governor Andrey Chibis has reportedly said that the families of those killed in the fire will each receive one million rubles ($15,300; £11,630), while the victims being treated in hospital will be given 500,000 rubles ($7,650; £5,815). How did the survivors escape? Mikhail Savchenko claims he was on the plane when it exploded into a fireball on the tarmac but “managed to jump out”. He shared a video of passengers running away from the burning plane, posting: “‘Guys I am all right, I am alive and in one piece.” One of the surviving passengers, Dmitry Khlebushkin, says that he is very grateful to the flight attendants.
“Only thanks to the flight attendants, I survived,” he told reporters. Kristian Kostov, a former Bulgarian Eurovision contestant, has posted on social media about witnessing the incident. He said people at the airport were left “shaking” after seeing the aircraft engulfed by fire and said other flights are now unable to take-off, BBS reported. Another eyewitness, Patrick Horlacher, told the BBC it was “shocking to see” the plane being ravaged by flames just minutes before he was due to board another flight.
An investigation has been opened into the incident, reports say. Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly been briefed and expressed condolences to the families of victims.
The region of Murmansk has announced a three-day mourning period.

Naira-DollarThis represents the second consecutive monthly decline in the volume of dollars traded (turnover) in the window since February. Hence, the 39 percent decline in monthly turnover in April suggests slowdown in dollar inflow from FPIs, which accounted for 72.53 percent of total inflow in March.
Financial Vanguard analysis of weekly turnover in the window showed that $1.09 was traded in the first week of April. Turnover fell by 11 percent to $966.3 million in the second week  but rose again by six percent to $1.03 billion in the third week. The window recorded $342.09 million in the last two days of the month. Further analysis shows  that the $4.6 billion turnover recorded in April increased year-to-date turnover to $24.2 billion, up by 24 percent from $19.61 billion in March.
However, the naira depreciated slightly by nine kobo in April as the indicative exchange rate of the window rose to N360.69 per dollar on 30th  of  April from N360.60 per dollar on April 1st. Vanguard.

Obaseki Asks Muslim Faithful To ‘Pray For Peace, Unity In Nigeria’

Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has asked Muslim faithful to imbibe the virtue of piety and pray for Nigeria’s unity and progress with the commencement of the Ramadan fast.

Obaseki said the period offers Islamic followers in the state and across the country to draw close to God, live in peace with their neighbours and dedicate themselves to the virtues of charity and sacrifice.

“As Muslim Faithful in the state and across the world commence the Ramadan fast, I urge them to uphold the hallmarks of the period which include commitments to family, faith and community.

“I also urge Muslims in Edo State to pray for the progress of the state as they have always and ask that Almighty Allah continue to direct and guild those in the position of authority so they will continue to do His will,” he stated.

While stressing that the state government has benefited immensely from the prayers of Muslims, especially during the month of Ramadan, Obaseki urged them to continue in the tradition.

“As a government, we have enjoyed the support and prayers of Muslims faithful whose prayers have continued to guide us in delivering a better, rewarding life to Edo people,” he added

Ogun State Prevents Winners Chapel From Repairing Ota Roads, Reasons

It is very strange that despite the economic viability and importance of Ota and it’s environs, the Ogun state government has left this area’s infrastructure largely unattended to.

Ota Roads constructionThis is reason why many stakeholders within this community are quite bewildered or embittered with government’s insistence that Living Faith church headed by Bishop David Oyedepo should not tar the road of those communities as it wasn’t a Church’s business to tar roads.
The Ogun state governments have over the years demanded that the Church should instead pay the Government and then leave construction for government contractors. However, knowing the corruption precedence of Nigerian states, the church has never been comfortable with that idea. Another reason is because there is so much variance in the amount the Church and the Govt budgeted for those same projects.
While the govt budgeted $40 million for the same roads, the Living Faith Church budgeted $5 million at the same time insisting $5 million would be enough to get the work done in those communities.
According to Leke Beecroft of Church Gist”The Chinese Construction Company, contracted by the Ogun State Government led by Senator Ibikunle Amosun has played a major role in fixing the stretch of road but for unspecified reasons had left some parts of it like the Oju-Ore Junction,Roundabout untouched. This had led to hours of heavy traffic for all users of the road.
it will be recalled that a few years ago, the Ogun State Government under the leadership of Otuba Gbenga Daniel had prevented and even arrested and charged to court the church’s Direct Labour Workers. The Ogun Government stopped the church from fixing the said road which leads to establishments like the Honda Training School and football pitch, Indomie Noodles Factory, Obasanjo Farms, The Bells University and Bells Secondary School (owned by Former President Obasanjo), Canaanland’s Covenant University, Faith City’s Crawford University and many banks among others, insisting it was not the business of the church which had earmarked about #560 million (about $5 million at the time)
The State Government had budgeted #4.4billion ($40 million) to fix the same road.
The Church has also decided to grade all inland areas around the locality of the church to help road users around the area ply their vehicles on these roads and this road grading project alone runs into tens of millions.”

Zamfara killings: President Buhari under fire for offering Fulani militia, bandits N100bn

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has described as a constitutional crime and an unmitigated evil tantamount to an impeachable offence the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari administration to go into dialogue in Zamfara State with armed fulani militia and bandits.

President BuhariHURIWA frowned at an alleged planned to appease “these mass murderers” with the whooping sum of N100 billion from the tax payers under the guise of setting up cattle ranches for their totally privately owned businesses of herders.
Besides, the group also carpeted the Acting Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Adamu Mohammed, for gleefully announcing the ‘truce’ reached in Zamfara between the Federal Government’s delegation made up largely of Hausa/Fulani Muslem dominated internal security team of the current administration and the Miyetti Allah cattle owners Association- a group that supports the activities of armed fulani Herdsmen over the past few years.
HURIWA expressed disappointment that a supposed chief law enforcement officer of the Country can descend so low as to beg persons suspected to have been carrying out persistent armed banditry and attacks across Zamfara, Kaduna, Niger, Katsina, to stop attacking Nigerians when it is the constitutional obligation of the Nigeria police force to enforce law and order and bring all criminal suspects to face the legal consequences of their crimes against humanity and against the Nigerian State.
In a statement issued to DAILY POST over the weekend against the backdrop of the purported meeting between the Federal Government and the leadership of Miyetti Allah cattle owners association, the group said the only possible reason the current administration could enter into dialogue with armed bandits is because the offenders share the same Ethno-religious affiliations with the holders of the top security portfolios who make up the exclusive Hausa/Fulani dominated Internal Security architecture.
The statement added, “The members of the current national security team made up of mostly one Ethnicity and persons of one Religious affiliations same with the armed fulani herdsmen and bandits have always made decisions that reflects their biasness and inclination to pamper and protect these armed bandits who ought to be dealt a heavy blow in line with the constitutional provisions.
“The other time the minister of Defence who is from Zamfara state was the person who rather than condemn and order the arrest and prosecution of armed fulani herdsmen unleashing mayhem and violence in Benue state was the one who tried to provide some kind of justification for these dare devil blood cuddling attacks on Benue communities by blaming the properly passed state legislation banning open grazing of cattle which has been at the core of much of the bloodshed.
“The minister of interior who is Fulani Moslem has on many occasions belittled the gravity of the armed fulani violent attacks and dismissed it not as a terror campaign but as a mere law and order issue which the police can handle.
“These members of the internal security team including Mr President have openly made statements that are obviously ambiguous and have failed to decisively treat these attacks by armed bandits and armed fulani attacks as a major national security challenge.
“This is why there is the urgency of the now for President Buhari to obey the constitution and appoint persons of diverse Ethno religious affiliations to make up the national security team and professionally and clinically tackle the rising waves of insecurity and national paralysis.
“As a group of committed patriots, we are shocked to read that this government has entered into a communion of the devil with the armed bandits and armed fulani herdsmen who have wreaked havoc and unleashed devastation across many communities in Nigeria.
“Why do we have laws and why do we have institutions of law enforcement? This shameful piece of bad news of seeking to bribe outlaws and terrorists by this government must be seen for what it is. It is treason that must be seen as an immediate impeachable offence.
“All those who communicated with bandits and outlaws must be arrested and prosecuted for high treason because the laws must not be a respecter of any person.”
HURIWA recalled that in a bizarre twist, the Federal Government practically offered monumental bribe against pur laws to the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, by offering it N100 billion over two years to stop kidnapping in the country.
The Federal Government delegation was led by the Minister of Interior, Abdul-Rahman Dambazau, and met with MACBAN leaders on Friday.
HURIWA quoted the media as reporting that this satanic meeting was a closed door event which lasted for over five hours as monetary negotiations according to a source dragged on until N100 billion was accepted.
MACBAN had said it would take nothing less than N160 billion.
But briefing news men after the meeting the exhausted Minister said, the “gathering is part of steps we have taken to tackle insecurity and clashes between herdsmen and farmers.”
“You should not forget the fact that we have extended the meeting as a regional one when the Economic Community of West African Countries hosted a conference on this,” it added.
HURIWA quoted the media as saying that General Danbazau affirmed as follows: “These issues were discussed, and part of the dialogue was to provide a national action plan on security challenges and solutions by all members of the ECOWAS commission, and to present it to the commission for consideration.
“That is the main reason we have come to Kebbi State, to dialogue with leaders of herdsmen as part of the process. DAILYPOST.
